Palo Alto will be the recipient of more public art.\u00a0 The City Council voted 8-0 last week to increase the \u201cpercent for art\u201d policy which will now include residential projects of five units or more as well continuing to include commercial developments that are at least 10,000 sq. ft. and have minimum costs of $200,000.\u00a0 The City Council also approved a proposal to create a public art master plan.<\/p>\n
Under the policy developers will have to set aside 1 percent of the estimated construction costs for public art.\u00a0 Developers will be given an option of hiring their own artist or just giving the city art fund the money.\u00a0 The art commissioned by developers will have to be visible to the public for a minimum of 40 hours per week.<\/p>\n
The City expects that the policy will generate about $2 million for public art projects over the next three years<\/p>\n
